It doesn’t happen every year, but it’s always a treat when the trails at Hartman Rocks open the day after the ski resort closes. Trails south of Powerline Rd. (Bambi’s, Sawtooth, Back-In, Outback, 9-0, Skull Pass and Aberdeen) remain closed to bikes and motos until May 15 to protect the Gunnison Sage grouse. Ring Dike, V-Drop and Free Fall are not recommended as they’re still holding snow and need another week or so to melt out. Stoke is high and spring fever is real – be cool out there people and respect your fellow trail users. Remember to yield when appropriate and keep speeds in check (especially around those blind corners).

Wildlife-related trail closures in Signal Peak remain in place. The campus trails are open to bikes and foot, but please respect the closure signage located at all entry points onto BLM lands.

Signal Peak:

  • To protect Gunnison Sage grouse, trails in the northwest corner of the Signal Peak area will be closed to ALL uses from March 15 – May 15. This includes the Ridgeline trail past the second radio tower, Rasta Gulch, Chicken Wing, Shoelace and the Cranor Hill trails.  All entry points to this area are marked with gates like the one above. Be good stewards and help us protect the Sage grouse during this critical time.
  • The entire Signal Peak area (not the campus trails) is closed to bikes from January 1 – April 30, and no use before 10am May 1 -May 15.
  • The entire Signal Peak area is closed to motorized use from January 1 – May 15.
